I love that the importance of home coming back to people. I work from home and my husband and I homeschool our children as well. We started a large garden to help offset the cost of groceries and to teach the children valuable life skills. Keep up the good work! We're right there with you!

Really nice article that got me to rethink some things and get some new priorities and goals. Only thing I disagreed with is the mention of switching to a "Christian Health Cost Share program". Those have been revealed many, many times to be straight up scams. I got worried for the writer when I read this. Just google "Christian Health Cost Share program scam", theres a lot of these companies and pretty much all of them have gotten into legal trouble for fraud, as they're not required to pay out certain amounts of money like typical regulated (what little regulation we have) insurance companies. You dont want to actually need that insurance money help, and be in the situation like so many others where they simply won't give you any money and offer prayers instead. Just had to get that out there to hopefully help prevent a bad situation (especially with children being involved in this awesome family). Here's a great video on how these have been scams! https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=oFetFqrVBNc

While health insurance companies are terrible, it's at least better to get something from them instead of nothing and feel like a fool and angry.

Glad you enjoyed the article, and thanks for your thoughts here! I certainly can’t speak to other cost sharing programs, especially the scams. Personally, we did our homework and picked Samaritan Cost Sharing. We know many people personally who have used it for years and absolutely love it. It’s a fantastic program, and certainly not a scam. Having those solid personal referrals sold us on its value. It’s a fraction of the cost of regular insurance, and we love knowing we’re directly helping others rather than fuel hedge funds, pensions, and massive bankers with traditional insurance. Obviously, folks need to do their homework with any insurance or cost sharing! We certainly did. Scams exist in any industry, insurance in particular (at this point most insurance health insurance is a borderline scam). Beyond that, big insurers like Humans are shutting down personal health insurance as the medical system breaks further. We’re so ready to vote with our dollars and leave the big insurers - we know many others who have done so and are happy with the results. I’m sure big insurance companies love to spread doubt and concerns about any new programs that threaten their profits. I’d encourage anyone to use Samaritan Ministries :) (not endorsed, just a happy customer). Just like supporting local farmers instead of industrial big ag - you gotta vote with your dollars! Big insurance won’t get my dollars again. :)

I totally understand. Just wanted to help keep you and your family safe. Samaritan Ministries is actually mentioned in the exact video I shared with some horrific customers experiences too. I'm not sure if youve been in a situation where you needed to ask for money from them yet, but I really suggest watching the video in full just so you can have a full understanding of the other side, especially their exclusion policies. For example, in the video they go over how since theyre a Christian organization they won't cover any treatment if you're gay, anything for STDs if the sex occured outside of marriage, substance abuse, or anything related to alcohol (one lady got beaten outside a bar and they didnt cover it because she went to the bar) and they're not required to cover pre-existing conditions like other health insurance companies so they don't. Other health insurance companies are also required to spend at least 80% of their money on actual healthcare costs, while sharing ministries are not, thus they do not. On average they spend only 16% of their money on paying out for health costs and the business pockets the rest. They make more on a percentage than the big insurance companies do, which is why they're popping up like crazy. They market themselves as "freedome from insurance", but you do actually want some insurance. There's no laws requiring they truly insure you though. I just really recommend you watch the video in full to have the info, so you can at least be better at avoiding their bear traps and know how to word your claims if you need to, in order to avoid getting very likely denied. Many people have gotten taken advantage of because these companies know our insurance system isn't great, and they prey on that very real pain to get people to run into their own scheme so they can make immense profit. Again, here's the video. Just empower yourself with as much knowledge as you can for your familys sake: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=oFetFqrVBNc

Again though, loved the article. Please watch the video lol.

Aawwh thank you! And no not currently, but it is my dream! I'd love to have a large garden, chickens, and goats. And from your article, a bunch of other things I didnt know existed like biochar. Right now I'm one of those average Americans that has a lot of student loans, in an apartment and can't afford a home, which you need to have your own sustainable land. But I plan on moving out of the country so I can afford a home and achieve this dream for my own land and sustainability (:

I do currently have a small herb garden though! Aloe vera, rosemary, and mint. I also grew some strawberries once haha.
