HomeFree: A video game to promote FREEDOM
Sharing the big ideas of permaculture, homesteading, off-grid systems and freedom with millions through the medium of gaming
We’re building a video game to quietly introduce people across the world to the powerful concepts of permaculture, homesteading, off-grid systems, and a new lifestyle of freedom. We’re calling this game “HomeFree”.
Why?
Because Acorn Land Labs sees “Home” as the future of humans living well.
And because breaking “Free” from big systems is our goal for us normal humans.
Enter: HomeFree.
The term HomeFree means: “In a secure or comfortable position, especially because of being certain to succeed”
Most young people today don’t feel this way at all... But they should!
Young people deserve some hope, and a path towards freedom.
HomeFree as a game contains all of the permaculture ideas, homestead concepts, local food systems, sustainable systems, off-grid tech and local-first concepts we promote here at Acorn Land Labs.
These fresh ideas give us hope.
These ideas give many of you hope.
We get emails every day from people thanking us for sharing these ideas of hope.
Billions of people today play video games globally. Our dream is that HomeFree might be the last video game many people ever play. Or at least, one of the last! Our dream is that people enjoy playing HomeFree, and then seek to recreate that simple, local lifestyle for themselves in the real world. Rolling up sleeves and redesigning the broken world around us.
Joe, our media director, loves to game and is leading the charge to design the HomeFree game with a talented RPG game development team we’ve partnered with. Their passion will help bring this work to life in a very real way! At this point in my life, I personally don’t play video games often. I like to garden, work my compost piles, feed my chickens, tend the pigs, and build off-grid systems in the real world. I will likely play more video games again when my sons are a bit older; and I’m sure I’ll enjoy gaming from time to time with them! My role in developing this game is to ensure the off-grid systems and methods are accurate, realistic, and truly educational. Video games are like most treats: not bad in moderation, but an addicting vice when used too much. We know billions of people play video games, so we are aiming to share these ideas with people through this creative medium. Video games have amazing potential as an education medium, but they’re not being leveraged properly for empowering people. We want to change that with HomeFree. We’re kicking off HomeFree as a kickstarter you can follow here.
The solutions to global problems are all LOCAL.
Permaculture food systems for healthy food
Homesteading methods & technologies
Off-grid systems for meeting basic needs
Circular systems for sustainable living
Strong community ties for local resilience
Healthy families for personal stability
Green spaces for mental tranquility
Walkable environments for safety & wellbeing
Affordable & creative small homes for security
These solutions certainly don’t come from “elites”, big government, bureaucrats or tech moguls. They come from us normal people working together locally to reinvent the world around us. They come from us breaking up the clutches of big tech, big agriculture, big government, big zoning, big car culture, big banks and big everything. We have to opt out. We have to build our own economies. We want our local communities back and the big elites & centralized systems out. The big systems simply take and don’t give back.
HomeFree is all about educating people of all ages: young, old and everywhere in between. We are particularly focused on reaching young people with these ideas, because young people need the most hope and the most help.
Young people today are coping with depression, anxiety, worry, financial disempowerment, and so many issues previous generations simply cannot relate to. The human world today is a paradox of gross excess and rapid decay.
Extreme housing costs, massive education debt, poor quality industrial food, unsustainable car-centric design, and our polluted industrial world DO NOT give young people much hope…
Young people deserve some hope.
Young people need access to fresh ideas they can use to break free from the failures of previous centralized systems. We need a revolution of freedom, simple living, permaculture, and remaking home to being a place of natural harmony...
…we would like to be HomeFree :)
Please follow the Acorn Land Labs Kickstarter page to keep up with the HomeFree video game project! We so appreciate your support!
Hey Kemble, I'm excited to see you guys expand your reach with this new project. As a game developer (both digital and tabletop) I have to play devil's advocate, and offer some constructive criticism on your announcement post, and in the positioning of the game as "the last video game many people ever play". I understand where how you landed on this as a catchy slogan, but it immediately turned me off. It comes across as dismissive of people who have found joy and important lessons from playing games (which I certainly have, and will continue to do). Kickstarter is a platform where you are asking people to believe in your intention, expertise, and capability to pull off this project. Going on to say "I personally don’t play video games" reads as a red flag. How can you understand the art of game design and interactive storytelling when you don't play, and apparently don't want people to play games? ... I believe in your mission, and I want you guys to make an awesome homesteading game! But I'm already invested in the community, I fear many people (especially your target demographic) will be turned off by this. Best of luck on the prep for the campaign!
How do I add the podcast to Spotify? I am not seeing any option to do so.
